My Love Note:
Dear Circle Thrift,
I have to admit, while growing up, I hated thrift stores. I hated accompanying my mom to Village Thrift, a block north of Olney Transportation Center, because we would spend what felt like hours sorting though uncool used merchandise. All that changed when I met you.
From 2007 to 2010, I worked amid your color-coordinated racks and snarky signs. Believe it or not, having to painstakingly comb through turtleneck after turtleneck and romance novel after romance novel fostered my love for the search. And interacting with individuals ranging from eccentric to disadvantaged, most from the mile radius encompassing the intersection of Broad and Washington, enhanced my understanding of my adopted neighborhood as well as my hometown.
Now that there’s distance between us (three years and an expansion), I better appreciate you. Not only do you provide affordable essentials in a hip atmosphere, you bring people together. In a city that’s changing rapidly – Philadelphia is growing, evolving, garnering positive attention, but also becoming increasingly segregated by income – you bring people from all walks together in pursuit of a common goal: finding deals.
